| Mr. Kevin
Whalen Named Agriscience Teacher Award Winner
The Agriscience
Teacher Award recognizes agricultural instructors who have excelled
with their classroom curriculum and activities in an attempt to provide
students with the most up-to-date and beneficial knowledge for a future
career in agricultural science areas. Wisconsin’s Agriscience
Teacher of the Year is eligible to compete for national recognition
at the National FFA Convention. The winner also receives a $150 check
for their efforts.
STATE
WINNER: Kevin Whalen, Arcadia
Mr. Whalen believes in taking traditional science practices and expanding
them into a higher level of science that students at Arcadia High School
may not have thought possible. Through his current agriscience curriculum,
Kevin's students are able to make science connections linking to their
physical and life sciences, chemistry and biotechnology concepts while
meeting Wisconsin science and agriscience standards.
He also offers a wide array of classes and FFA activities that help
students understand and grasp the different concepts that he is teaching.
Along with taking traditional science to a new level, Mr. Whalen keeps
up to date on new trends in agriscience by attending different workshops
and conferences. He is then able to relate and teach his classes fresh
information that will in turn prepare students for the 'real world.'
As the Wisconsin Agriscience Teacher of the Year, Whalen is eligible
to compete for national recognition. Four national finalists will be
selected in August and will receive money to purchase new equipment
for their classrooms.
