No Major Sunflower Production Problems Reported

The vast majority of the sunflower production region had above normal temperatures last week aiding in plant development, reports the National Sunflower Association. Most of the region has adequate to surplus soil moisture.

Kansas is reporting that 88 % of the crop has been planted and 72 % of the crop has emerged. This number likely does not include sunflower being double cropped. Texas planting is reported to be 92% complete while harvesting of winter planted sunflower in the south is continuing. No major production issues are being reported.

Rust development is being closely monitored. Lygus bug numbers have been advancing in Manitoba.

According to the USDA Weekly Crop Report, South Dakota sunflowers are rated 0 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 54 percent good and 14 percent excellent, while the North Dakota sunflower crop is rated 0 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 76 percent good and 5 percent excellent. In Minnesota, the crop is rated 3 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 71 percent good and 8 percent excellent. The Kansas sunflower crop is rated 0 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 69 percent good and 6 percent excellent.
