U.S. Spring Wheat Harvest Complete
USAgNet - 09/28/2016

Harvest of the U.S. spring wheat crop is complete, with the exception of some of the latest planted fields. With 96 percent of the spring wheat samples collected and analyzed at the spring wheat quality lab, quality remained relatively stable with last week. Protein dropped slightly from 14.3 to 14.2 percent. Falling number average remains above 400 seconds and test weights are stable at 61.2 pounds per bushel (80.5 kg/hl). Damage is fairly low at 0.1 percent with total defects at 0.9 percent. The crop currently grades a No. 1 Dark Northern Spring with average vitreous kernel content of 77 percent. This will be the last Crop Progress report until final quality date, including milling and baking data, are available.

Durum harvest is nearing completion with 92 percent of the North Dakota crop and 97 percent of the Montana crop harvested. About 90 percent of the durum samples have been collected and analyzed. Quality did not change significantly from last week. Average protein remains at 13.7 percent and average falling number is above 400 seconds. Test weight is 60.4 pounds per bushel (87.7 kg/hl). Damage is averaging 0.3 percent with total defects at 1.3 percent.

The crop grades a No. 1 Hard Amber Durum with average vitreous kernel content of 86 percent. The biggest concern continues to be the presence of DON in some of the samples. While that data has not been completely analyzed, it is evident that some samples in the northern tier of North Dakota and northeast Montana do have elevated levels of DON. More complete quality analysis data will be available in the final report.
