World Hunger Summit Brings Together Global Leaders, Students
USAgNet - 02/18/2016
The University of Missouri will host the 11th annual Universities Fighting World Hunger (UFWH) summit. This year's summit, "From Poverty to Promise" will bring together leaders from universities across the country to address domestic and international food
security and hunger issues.
UFWH is an academic and student partnership between the UN World Food Programme and institutions of higher education around the world. Since its founding, UFHW has expanded to almost 300 campuses, all committed to stimulating student awareness
about hunger. Summits are held annually at different campuses and provide a venue for students to network, learn and create innovative solutions that address global hunger and other sustainability issues.
This year's summit Feb. 26 and 27 will feature panels, interactive sessions, breakout workshops and renowned keynote speakers.
Speakers include:
-- Amir Abdulla, deputy executive director of the World Food Programme (WFP). Abdulla oversees the WFP offices of Addis Ababa, Geneva and New York and is responsible for coordinating WFP's activities and relationships within the UN system. Prior to
that, Abdulla was WFP's Chief Financial Officer where he led the first large scale adoption of international public sector accounting standards within the UN system.
-- Catherine Bertini, professor of public administration and international affairs, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs of Syracuse. Bertini is co-chair of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs' Global Agricultural Development Initiative and Chair of
the Council's Girls in Rural Economics Initiative. She received the 2003 World Food Prize.
-- Nina Furstena, program director for food systems communication and teaches at MU Science and Agriculture Journalism program.
-- Steve Taravella, currently the World Food Programme's senior spokesperson. He regularly speaks to media about WFP's emergency operations around the world. Prior to this, he was the director of communications for the International Partnership for
Microbicides and for Family Health International. In 1989, he won the Dag Hammarskjold Award for Human Rights Advocacy in Journalism.
-- Nick Droege, a social entrepreneur, growth strategist and corporate innovator from the University of Missouri. Working with university administration, Droege launched Tiger Pantry, a food pantry for those affiliated with the university, including students,
faculty and staff.
