Ethanol Capacity in the U.S. Tops 7.5 Billion Gallon

The U.S. ethanol production capacity has risen 40 percent since last year to 7.5 billion gallons per year.

Despite some ethanol companies suspending or delaying construction, production capacity continues to grow. There are currently 136 U.S. ethanol distilleries including 63 plants under construction and 8 undergoing expansion.

If all the new plants and expansions come on line, total U.S. capacity will be about 13.3 billion gallon per year.

The new U.S. energy law mandates a five-fold increase in the use of biofuels to 36 billion gallon per year by 2022.
