Lawmakers, USDA Leaders Meet with President Trump to Discuss Farm Bill
USAgNet - 05/14/2018
House Ag Chairman Mike Conaway, Senate Ag Chairman Pat Roberts and USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue were summoned to the White House last week to discuss farm bill progress with President Donald Trump.
Following the afternoon meeting, POLITICO reports that Conaway said Trump is "a really strong proponent of the work requirements being improved in SNAP."
He added that Trump believes that work is a pathway to prosperity and that our program should help people get on that path and not trap them in some sort of public assistance program.
Despite some news reports, Trump didn't threaten to veto a farm bill if stricter work requirements weren't included, Conaway said. Rather, the president could use his Twitter pulpit to persuade.
