Emergency Pesticide Registration for Potatoes Enacted
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/20/2009

Wisconsin potato producers are preparing their warehouses for the upcoming harvest season and have an immediate need to disinfect both porous and non-porous surfaces to prevent contamination of potatoes with the organism that causes potato ring rot. To best control this destructive pathogen, a crisis pesticide exemption for a disinfectant has been declared, announced officials with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture.

The crisis exemption procedure allows states to register a pesticide for a use that does not have prior federal approval to meet a crop-related emergency such as an insect outbreak or a plant disease.

In order for seed potatoes to be eligible for certification in Wisconsin, they must not be contaminated with the potato ring rot organism. Potato ring rot can spread quickly throughout a farm and can cause severe crop losses, in addition to causing seed potatoes to be rejected from certification. In addition, producers need to control a variety of pathogens that destroy or otherwise reduce yield of post-harvest potatoes, both seed potatoes and commercially grown potatoes.

Wisconsin growers can now apply 1-Stroke Environ to hard, non-porous surfaces (such as metal) and porous surfaces (such as wood, rubber, and concrete) and on a variety of objects involved with potato production including storage containers and storage areas, vehicles, equipment, tools, greenhouses, growth chambers, and footwear.

Those who intend to use this product must first obtain the special product labeling (use directions) that have been approved for the crisis exemption. The product label is available on the department's Website at www.datcp.state.wi.us then search for 'special pesticide registrations.' Or call 608-224-4547.
