More Areas Declared Disastrous, FEMA Coming to Wisconsin
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/23/2007

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials could be in Wisconsin by Tuesday to assess areas hit by flash flooding and storm damage in the southwestern part of the state. A spokeswoman for Wisconsin Emergency Management says FEMA crews will first need to wait until the flood waters recede before doing much work.

This week, Governor Jim Doyle declared a state of emergency in La Crosse, Vernon, Crawford, Richland and Sauk counties, and asked President Bush to declare a disaster area so federal assistance can help governments, businesses and people who have damage. A federal disaster declaration would make the area eligible for grants and low-interest loans, she said.

Preliminary damage reports topped $38 million earlier this week and were expected to keep rising. Some areas have received well over a foot of rain since Saturday--completely destroying some buildings and neighborhoods. About half of Gays Mills, a village of 640 people, remained under water yesterday as the weather forecast called for more rain.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture is also assessing crop damages for its weekly crop summary, due to be released early next week.
