Wisconsin Farm Fields Getting Much Needed Moisture
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/26/2014

Multiple storm systems experienced throughout the Badger State during the past week has done wonders to help ease the dry topsoil moisture conditions. Monday's state crop report said the showers--which ranged between one to three inches--may have slowed haying and small grains harvest, but benefitted the conditions of row crops.

Topsoil moistures improved statewide to about 18 percent short to very short. That's compared to 45 percent short to very short last week. Above normal temperatures and high humidity also accelerated growth in hay, pasture, corn and soybeans.

As of Sunday, about 95 percent of the state's corn crop had silked, with 53 percent in the dough stage or beyond and 10 percent in the dent stage. Corn condition was rated 68 percent good to excellent.

Ninety-six percent of soybeans had bloomed and 88 percent were setting pods. Soybeans condition was rated 69 percent good to excellent.

And 64 percent of oats for grain has been harvested. Nearly all of the winter wheat for grain has been harvested. And the third cutting of alfalfa was 68 percent complete; with fourth crop now nine percent complete.
