Crop Report: Summer Weather Lingering Till the End of August
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/30/2016

Wisconsin once again experienced muggy conditions and scattered showers during the past week. The state's agriculture department said in its latest crop/weather report that wet conditions made it difficult to dry hay, and appeared to be causing some late-season mold and diseases in soybeans.

Reporters said corn silage was being chopped in some areas and winter wheat seeding was just beginning in others. Dry weather will be needed to facilitate fall fieldwork, though southeastern Wisconsin remains in need of rain.

As of Sunday, about 85 percent of the state's corn acreage was in or beyond the dough stage, which is still well ahead of average. About half of the corn was dented--seven days ahead of last year, and nine days better than the five-year average. Corn for silage is now about three percent harvested.

Reporters say 98 percent of the soybeans were setting pods or beyond. Leaves were turning color on 10 percent of the beans, and two percent were dropping leaves.

Oats for grain were 94 percent harvested, about five days ahead of last year, and nine days ahead of the average.

In the hay fields, the third cutting of alfalfa was 91 percent complete. Fourth crop is about 40 percent harvested.
