First Annual Badger Production Sale Slated for October 11
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/27/2008
This fall the University of Wisconsin-Madison Animal Sciences Students will be helping host the First Annual Badger Production Sheep Sale. The event, which takes place October 11 in Arlington, will be
featuring sheep from the Arlington Sheep Unit. Viewing will begin at 9 a.m., an educational session will be provided by Dr. Dave Thomas at 11 a.m., and the sale will begin at 2 p.m.
Students have begun working on many aspects of the sale ranging from advertising, health requirements, selection of animals, and organizing many other tasks. This opportunity is providing the students with
the experience of organizing an event for the first time and overcoming many obstacles. They are learning and practicing different marketing techniques in print and web based forms, working with state
agencies to meet proper requirements, enhancing knowledge of selection and preparation of sheep, and working with professionals in the industry, team members and university staff.
There will be performance data for all sale lots provided on the website and in the sale catalog. All lots will sell as buyers' choice. The winning bidder will select one of two equally matched animals. The
non-selected animal will return to the university flock as a replacement animal. This system is being used to ensure all of the best lambs are being offered. Sale lambs have been pictured and are being posted
on the website, www.badgerproductionsale.com, the sale catalog is being completed and will be mailed in early September.
