State Milk Production Falls, While National Output Rises
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/19/2019

Total milk output in America's Dairyland fell slightly during the month of August when compared to the same time last year. According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, production totaled 2.61 billion pounds during the month, down 0.5 percent from August 2018, but more than July's 2.60 billion pounds. This marks the fourth consecutive month of lower output when compared to year-to-year figures.

Nationally, 17.4 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was a fractional 0.4 percent increase over 2018, but less than the previous month's 17.5 billion.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.35 billion pounds. Colorado and Texas tied for having the greatest increase in output as they produced 6.4 percent more milk from the same period last year. However, 10 of the top 24 states had lower year-to-year production last month.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 9.32 million head, 71,000 head less than August 2018, and 2,000 head less than July 2019. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head, which was 1,000 head less than last month, and 7,000 fewer than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,060 pounds, which was unchanged from last year's figures.
