Farmers Get Better Weather to Harvest Crops
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/18/2018

Wisconsin farmers are finally making a dent in their fall harvest activity, thanks to a much dryer week weatherwise. The state's agriculture department said in Monday's weekly crop progress summary that sunny skies and above normal temperatures have firmed up wet ground and pushed crops quickly toward maturity. Corn silage chopping was running full speed ahead in all parts of the state, with some areas seeing high moisture grain being harvested.

Topsoil moisture levels were rated one percent very short, six percent short, 81 percent adequate and 12 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, 96 percent of the corn had reached the dough stage, which is more than a week and a half ahead of last year and seven days better than average. Eighty-two percent of the crop was dented. Reporters say about a third of the corn has been chopped for silage so far--which represented a 25 percentage-point jump compared to a week earlier.

Leaves were turning color on 78 percent of the soybeans, with 37 percent dropping leaves. In some areas of the state, the beans were already being combined.

About 29 percent of the winter wheat was planted. That's about one day ahead of last year. Eight percent of the winter wheat has emerged.

And the third cutting of alfalfa was 96 percent complete, eight days behind last year, but even with the five-year average. The fourth cutting was 65 percent baled or chopped.
