International Ginseng Festival to Kick-Off in Wausau
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/14/2017
The first-ever International Ginseng Festival is making its way to central Wisconsin this weekend. The inaugural event will happen September 15-17 in downtown Wausau.
Festivities include cooking demonstrations, hands on activities for kids, poster contests and off-site tours of area growing operations. There will also be vendors on hand to display their ginseng products.
The perennial Herb, which is consumed in the form of a root, is often used by the Chinese in their practice of traditional medicine. Those in the industry say Wisconsin has the perfect climate and soil types to give ginseng the ideal flavor and quality.
Wisconsin produces about 700,000 pounds of cultivated ginseng each year, which represents about 95 percent of all the ginseng grown the U.S. Most of the crop goes to China and Hong Kong.
Marathon County is by far the top growing area of the state with more than 185 producers.
