Taylor County Mink Animals Test Positive for Coronavirus
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/09/2020

The National Veterinary Services Laboratories has confirmed that nine mink that died at a Taylor County fur farm have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans. This is the first confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection among Wisconsin's mink population.

The test was conducted by the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the farm and all of its animals have since been quarantined.

DATCP is coordinating with the Department of Natural Resources and other local, state and national health agencies to provide assistance to the farm.

Wisconsin becomes the second state with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 at a mink farm. In August, Utah confirmed its first cases of infected animals on fur operations.

Animal health experts say there is no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading SARS-CoV-2 to humans, but people infected with the virus can spread it to them.
