Wisconsin's Overall Cattle Numbers Unchanged From Last Year

All cattle and calves on Wisconsin farms as of January 1 totaled 3.45 million head. According to the USDA's latest cattle report, that was unchanged from the same time a year earlier.

State cattlemen had 310,000 beef cows on hand as of last month, which is about the same as early 2020. And milk cows, at 1.26 million, was also unchanged from last year.

The number of heifers 500 pounds and over totaled 800,000 head, down four percent from last January. Heifers for beef cow replacement were also down by 10,000 head at 80,000. And heifers for milk cow replacement were at 660,000 head, down four percent.

Meanwhile, the total number of steers weighing 500 pounds and over were up six percent at 360,000 head. Bulls weighing 500 pounds and over was unchanged at 30,000 head. Calves under 500 pounds on January 1 totaled 690,000 head, which was slighter higher than last year.

The 2019 calf crop was estimated at 1.40 million head, down one percent from the 2019 calf crop. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in all feedlots in January totaled 250,000 head, up four percent from one year ago.
