WCGA: Motorists Urged to be Alert During Fall Harvest Season
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/19/2014

Safety practices during the fall harvest doesn't just apply to farmers. The Wisconsin Corn Growers Association says motorists on public roadways are also encouraged to do their part to make sure everyone is safe while sharing the roads with large farm equipment.

With the increased activity, the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association is urging farmers and motorists to be more cautious on the roads.

"Farmers and motorists share responsibility in keeping our roads safe," said WCGA President Brian Long. "With a little patience and cooperation on everyone's part, we can all avoid accidents."

He says moving agricultural machinery between fields on roads is a necessity to get our crops harvested, stored or sent to market.

"We know drivers get impatient with our large, slow-moving farm implements, and farmers get frustrated with heavy traffic when they are trying to get crops harvested," said Long.

Most farm machinery is transported at speeds of 25 miles per hour or slower while other vehicles often are traveling at much faster speeds. This difference causes motorists to miscalculate how fast they are approaching farm machinery.

The WCGA also wants motorists to know that slow moving vehicles are to have bright orange triangle Slow Moving Vehicle signs on the back, and some may have additional lighting and reflective tape to be visible in the evening.
