State, National Milk Production Up During August

Wisconsin dairy farmers produced more milk in August compared to the same time a year earlier. According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, the Dairy State harvested 2.36 billion pounds of milk last month, up 1.2 percent from August 2013, but lower than July's 2.37 billion pounds.

Nationally, 16.2 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 2.6 percent higher than in 2013, but less than the previous month's 16.4 billion.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.4 billion pounds. Florida had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 193 million pounds of milk in August, up 8.4 percent from the same month last year.

All of the major milk producing states had an increase in production in August when compared with last year, with the exception of Oregon.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows in the major dairy states totaled 8.58 million head, 60,000 head more than August 2013, but 1,000 head less than July 2014. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head. Production per cow averaged 1,860 pounds, up 25 pounds from a year ago.
