Flooding Prompts Emergency Declaration in 13 Counties
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/23/2016

Another batch of severe weather has added to the long list of Wisconsin countries disrupted by major flooding during the 2016 growing season. On Thursday, Governor Scott Walker declared a State of Emergency for 13 western counties following torrential rains that have fallen since Wednesday.

With more than 10 inches of precipitation measured in some parts of the region, several schools were forced to close down in Clark County and scores of roads were not able to be accessed because of unsafe conditions.

"I am instructing the Wisconsin National Guard and all state agencies to provide assistance to those affected by this natural disaster," Walker said.

Counties mentioned in the latest declaration included Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Crawford, Eau Claire, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Richland, Sauk, Trempealeau and Vernon.

The executive order helps local governments pay for the unreimbursed costs of damage and cleanup to public infrastructure.

Last month, Eau Claire, Buffalo and Trempealeau Counties experienced severe storms and flooding on August 10-11. And in July, Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Iron, Price, Sawyer and Washburn Counties experienced millions of dollars in damages when a major storm system moved through northern Wisconsin.
