Major Rainfall Set Harvest Back for Many
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/27/2016

Farmers in western and central Wisconsin got another major dose of wet weather during the past week, causing damage to roads and bridges and halting tractors and forage harvesters literally in their tracks. The latest crop progress report noted that the storm system dumped heavy rain across the state on Tuesday and Wednesday with additional scattered showers in some parts of the state every day of the week.

Total rainfall reportedly exceeded 10 inches in some areas, causing topsoil moisture levels to hit 59 percent adequate and 40 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, about 95 percent of the state's corn acreage was dented and 66 percent was reported mature. Corn harvested for silage was 64 percent chopped, while the grain harvest has just started in the southern part of the state. There were some reports of mold on the ears.

Soybeans were turning color on nearly all of the state's crop. Seventy-three percent of the beans were dropping leaves. And some producers have already started to combine their soybean fields.

Twenty-two percent of winter wheat was planted as of the weekend, with nine percent now emerged. The fourth cutting of alfalfa was 85 percent finished.

And fall tillage was at seven percent complete.
