CSP Program Hits Million-Acre Milestone in Wisconsin
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/30/2016

Wisconsin farmers have officially enrolled one million acres into the Conservation Stewardship Program. The Natural Resources Conservation Service, along with over 50 partners, farmers and dignitaries celebrated the achievement in Bloomer this week during an event at DD Farms, Inc., which recently completed their first five-year contract through CSP and have re-enrolled to complete further conservation enhancements on their dairy operation.

The program provides opportunities for farmers who are already established conservation stewards, helping them improve water quality, soil health and wildlife habitat.

NRCS Chief Jason Weller was in the Badger State for the announcement. He says CSP is the largest conservation program in the United States with 70 million acres of productive agricultural and forest land enrolled. In Wisconsin, landowners have enrolled 1,047,462 acres as of late-September.

Meanwhile, State Conservationist Jimmy Bramblett highlighted CSP in Wisconsin and presented awards to the top four NRCS Service Centers in the state. They include Chippewa Falls, Ellsworth, Lena and Menomonie.

CSP was reauthorized in the 2014 farm bill, and is a voluntary program that offers payments to producers who exercise good land stewardship and agree to further improve their conservation performance. CSP is available to all producers regardless of operation size, type, crops produced, or geographic location.
