Sen. Baldwin Appointed to Senate Ag Appropriations Panel
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 01/30/2015
Wisconsin once again has representation on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture. Freshman Senator Tammy Baldwin was among 13 senators appointed to the panel. Her predecessor, former Sen. Herb Kohl, served on the committee.
"We are pleased Senator Baldwin is continuing Wisconsin's tradition of having a meaningful presence on this subcommittee to provide a strong voice for the state's agricultural issues," said Cooperative Network CEO Bill Oemichen, who's group encouraged Baldwin to pursue the assignment. "We recognize she has
many choices, and we're extremely grateful to see this is one of her priorities."
The Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee is one of 12 subcommittees of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations. It has jurisdiction over budgets for the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, and has discretionary spending authority on food safety
programs, foreign agriculture assistance, rural development programs, and loan guarantees for rural housing and rural electric infrastructure.
During Sen. Kohl's tenure on the subcommittee, the group helped obtain funding support for several significant projects including development of the Farmers' Health Cooperative of Wisconsin and ongoing cooperative business development in rural Wisconsin through the USDA.
