Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/05/2016

Five agricultural cooperatives from Wisconsin have made this year's list of the top 100 agricultural co-ops for 2015. According to the USDA Rural Development program, Foremost Farms USA ranked 15th on the list with $1.5 billion in sales last year, with Cooperative Regions of Organic Producer Pools placing 25th at $1.01 billion. Equity Cooperative Livestock Sales Association, United Cooperative and Landmark Services Cooperative were also among the nation's top ag companies with less than a billion dollars in gross revenues.

The agency said total business volume for the top 100 ag co-ops were about $149 billion last year, which was 16 percent less than in 2014. However, net income rose from $4.3 billion to $4.9 billion in 2015.

Iowa had the greatest number of co-ops on the list with 15 of the nation's top farmer-owned enterprises. Minnesota had the second highest number with 11.

CHS Inc., a fuel, grain and food cooperative based in Inner Grove Heights, Minnesota, remains the nation's largest cooperative with $34.7 billion in sales last year. Dairy Farmers of America came in second place with $13.9 billion. Land O'Lakes was third with $13.1 billion.
