Wisconsin FFA Ready for National Convention in Indy
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/15/2018

Members of the Wisconsin FFA Association will carry on their tradition of excellence next week as delegates, officers and award winners head to Indianapolis, Indiana, for the 91st National FFA Convention. The National FFA Organization says they are expecting over 65,000 to attend the event, as students representing the blue-and-gold will spend the week learning about agriculture, meeting new friends and getting motivated by inspirational speakers.

Among the highlights during this year's convention will be a concert by Garth Brooks, along with keynote addresses by inspirational speaker Kyle Scheele and Mary Snapp, a corporate vice president for Microsoft.

The popular career and trade show will be open throughout the week. And students will be motivated and inspired by the retiring addresses of this year's national FFA officers.

"National FFA Convention is a time when Wisconsin FFA members bring their best," says State FFA Advisor Jeff Hicken. "I love to see them celebrate their monumental achievements on the national stage, but also share in the excitement of everyone in attendance. These are the types of moments our Wisconsin FFA Foundation partners need to hear and cheer about, because they demonstrate the real-life impact of their generosity."

Wisconsin's delegation will be especially busy this year. Katy Vacula of the Big Foot FFA in Walworth is a finalist for the American Star in Agriscience award. A student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Vacula is studying ways to eliminate antibiotics in birds by treating eggs with vaccines prior to the chickens being hatched.

Eight members will be competing as national finalists for Proficiency Awards. Over 150 other students from the Badger State will be receiving their American FFA Degrees. And Meikah Dado from the Amery FFA is Wisconsin's candidate running for a national FFA officer position.

Meanwhile, many local chapters will also be recognized during the conference as Wisconsin programs will be honored as three-star chapters. They include Badger, Cochrane-Fountain City, Deforest, Denmark, Freedom, Manawa, Waupaca and Weyauwega-Fremont. Earning Two-Star ratings will be Amery, Barron, Beaver Dam, Big Foot, Columbus, Granton, Kiel, Mishicot, Pardeeville, Prairie Farm, Sauk Prairie, Shullsburg, Stanley-Boyd, Tomah, Waupun, Whitehall and Winneconne. And the Waupaca FFA has been named as a finalist for the National Model of Excellence Award.

Also at the convention, agriculture teachers Glenn Sims of Mukwonago and Paul Larson from Freedom will be bestowed with VIP Citations. Carla Gunst of Pine River and Don Josko, who now lives in South Dakota, will be granted honorary membership, along with ag teachers DeWayne Fossum, Bloomer, and Dan. Ziegler, New Glaris. And the organization will present its Distinguished Service Citation to Culver Franchising System of Prairie Du Sac.

The National FFA Convention will be held October 24-27 at the Indiana Convention Center.
