Cool, Rainy Week Causing Crops to Deteriorate
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/16/2018

Farmers all across Wisconsin found themselves at a standstill again last week as continued cold and wet weather conditions prevented them from resuming their fall harvest activities. Parts of the state also saw its first snow fall of the season, according to the weekly crop/weather summary from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service. The report further noted that frustrations were growing because of the ongoing high grain moistures--which is resulting in mold and diseases in some cases.

As of Sunday, 93 percent of corn was mature, which is nearly three weeks ahead of last year and two weeks better than the five year average. Corn harvested for grain was 19 percent complete, 11 days sooner than in 2017 and three days ahead of average. The moisture content of corn harvested for grain was reported at 24 percent. And all but eight percent of the corn for silage was chopped as of last week.

Soybeans dropping leaves was reported at 95 percent complete, nearly a full week ahead of last year and four days sooner than normal. So far, 21 percent of the beans have been harvested--11 days behind last year and eight days slower than average.

Sixty-three percent of winter wheat was planted and 45 percent has emerged. And the fourth cutting of alfalfa was 90 percent complete.

Meanwhile, fall tillage was reported at 16 percent complete. That's four days behind last year and a full week slower than usual, mainly because of the wet field conditions.
