State's Hog Inventory Running Below Year-Ago Levels

Wisconsin's hog and pig inventory was 390,000 on September 1, down 30,000 from September 2007 and 10,000 from June 2008. The state's agriculture department reports that breeding hog inventory dropped 10 percent, or 5,000 head, from last year. The current breeding herd in the state is estimated at 45,000 head. Market hog numbers declined by 25,000 from last year to 345,000 head.

During June-August, Wisconsin's pig crop was 218,000 head, a six percent decrease from the same time a year ago. Sows farrowing during the quarter totaled 24,000. These farrowings are down 2,000 from both a year ago and last quarter. Pigs per litter averaged 9.10, compared to 8.90 last year and 9.10 last quarter.

U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1 was 68.7 million head. This was up two percent from 2007 and up one percent from June 1. Breeding Inventory, at 6.05 million head, was down three percent from last year and down one percent from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 62.6 million head, was up three percent from last year and up two percent from last quarter. The June-August 2008 U.S. pig crop, at 29.3 million head, was up one percent from 2007 and up 10 percent from 2006.
