Wisconsin Cows Take Top Honors at WDE's Jr. Jersey Show

A pair of Wisconsin four-year-old cows have topped the Central National Junior Jersey Show this week at World Dairy Expo in Madison. 'Gil-Bar Sparkler Juliann,' exhibited by Wade Kessenich of DeForest, received Grand Champion honors. Reserve Grand Champion was awarded to Tm Julian Alexis, exhibited by Justin Riley of Gays Mills. The show was judged by Ron Rider of Upton, Kentucky.

Over 2,500 head of the world's finest dairy cattle were expected to be shown over the five-day show. And Canadian cattle are once again be competing on the colored shavings for the first time since the border closed in 2003.

Meanwhile, the Dairy State was also in the spot light when Charles, George, Tom and Mark Crave of Waterloo were recognized in front of a large crowd as the 2008 World Dairy Expo Dairymen of the Year; and Marion Barlass from Janesville as the Dairy Woman of the Year. They were all honored during the Expo's 'Dinner with the Stars' banquet on Wednesday evening. Also being recognized during the banquet were Industry Person of the Year Dr. Michael Hutjens of Urbana, Illinois; and Dr. Hubertus Diers, Altenberge Westfalia, Germany, who is this year's International Person of the Year.

As for the schedule for the remainder of the week, attendees can expect to see the National Guernsey Show, Grand International Red & White Show, International Holstein Show and the World Classic Holstein Sale on Friday. The show wraps up on Saturday with the Parade of Champions and Selection of 2008 Supreme Champions.

The show runs daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
