WI leads Snap bean harvest - dominates vegetables

In 2023, Wisconsin farmers achieved a significant harvest, leading the nation in snap bean production with 51,900 acres yielding 6.75 million cwt. The fresh market contributed 148,400 cwt, valued at $13.8 million, while processing production reached 329,591 tons with a total value of $52.1 million. Wisconsin dominated snap bean production, comprising 48 percent of the nation's output, which totaled 14.1 million cwt.

Sweet corn cultivation encompassed 55,000 acres, producing 10.7 million cwt in Wisconsin. The fresh market generated 643,500 cwt, valued at $25.9 million, while processing yielded 502,466 tons with a total worth of $58.3 million. Wisconsin ranked third in sweet corn production, contributing 17 percent to the national total of 62.4 million cwt.

Green pea production in Wisconsin for 2023 reached 1.39 million cwt from 28,500 acres, valued at $26.6 million. Fresh market production amounted to 1,400 cwt, valued at $274,000, while processing green peas reached 69,470 tons with a value of $26.3 million. Nationally, the U.S. recorded a total green pea production of 5.23 million cwt.

Cabbage production in Wisconsin achieved 2.40 million cwt, valued at $32.3 million. Additionally, cucumbers, harvested from 6,900 acres, contributed to a total production value of $23.6 million. Wisconsin farmers also harvested 2,900 acres of pumpkins in 2023, totaling $9.0 million in production value. These robust agricultural outputs underscore Wisconsin's pivotal role in the nation's vegetable production landscape.
