Former WI Holstein Director Charged with Embezzlement
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/16/2017

The former leader of the Wisconsin Holstein Association has been charged after he allegedly embezzled money from the group while serving as its executive director. Larry Nelson, 38, of Fitchburg worked for the Baraboo-based organization from 2011 to 2016. That's when authorities say he allegedly took more than $15,000 by using the association's credit card for non-work related expenses.

Nelson was charged last week with business theft by the Sauk County District Attorney's office. According to the complaint, WHA office staff noticed discrepancies between his expense reports and the company's credit card statements.

Court records show his personal charges included transactions at sports bars, night clubs and hair salons; and racked up other expenses during personal trips to Milwaukee, Chicago and Canada. He also allegedly wrote multiple checks to himself out of the association's account.

"The WHA Board of Directors would like to commend the WHA Staff for finding the irregularities and their cooperation with the investigation," the association's board said in a statement. "The board would also like membership to know that new procedures and protocols have been implemented for the finances to prevent further problems from occurring. WHA will be working with the legal system to claim restitution of the misused funds and our legal counsel will be facilitating that process. The WHA board would also like membership to know that the financial health of the organization is strong and the majority of funds within the organization are safely invested and were never put at risk."

Nelson resigned from his position in November 2016 to take another job, but continued to provide services to the Wisconsin Holstein Association on a part-time basis. He was terminated from that role in April after suspicions arose that he had embezzled funds.
