'Alice' Cuts First Christmas Tree of the Season
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/29/2021

Wisconsin's 74th Alice in Dairyland helped kick-off the holiday season over the weekend with a visit to Dane County. That's where Julia Nunes cut down the state's first official Christmas tree of the year during a ceremony at Hann's Christmas Tree Farm near Oregon on Saturday.

Owned by Greg Hann, the operation is a family-owned farm producing cut-your-own and fresh-cut Christmas trees and wreaths. They've been in business since 1969.

"There's a lot of products that Christmas tree farms are working to produce each year," Nunes said. "I love having a real tree at our home. It not only helps Wisconsin farmers, but it makes our house smell amazing."

The Fraser fir tree Julie cut down will be displayed at the Park Hotel in Madison, with local elementary students from St. Ann Catholic School in Stoughton providing the decorations.

This is the second year Nunes had the opportunity to be part of the tradition, with her first tree cutting taking place via Facebook in 2020 due to COVID restrictions.

Meanwhile, the area will also be the site of next year's Alice in Dairyland finals, which is being held in Dane County in May 2022.

This marks the 22nd year the annual first cutting was held by the reigning Alice in Dairyland.
