One Dead in Vehicle vs. Amish Buggy Crash in Taylor Co.

An accident involving an Amish buggy carrying a mother and her children last week in north central Wisconsin has resulted in one death and a number of severe injuries.

According to the Taylor County Sheriff's Department, a vehicle was traveling north on County Highway E in the town of Little Black on Wednesday afternoon when it struck the horse-drawn buggy from behind.

Ten people were in the buggy, of which nine of them were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. One of those passengers has since died of their injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 35-year-old Skyler Opelt of Medford. He is being held in the Taylor County Jail after being charged with seven counts of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance causing injury, homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, and second degree reckless injury.
