Another Month, Another Increase in State Milk Production
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/22/2018

Wisconsin dairy cows continue to outpace themselves by producing more milk during the month of September than the same time a year earlier. According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, state output totaled 2.51 billion pounds last month, up 2.0 percent from September 2017, but less than August's 2.62 billion pounds (which had more days on the calendar).

Nationally, 16.4 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was 1.5 percent more than in 2017, but lower than the previous month's 17.2 billion pounds.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.21 billion pounds. Texas had the largest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 1.04 billion pounds of milk in September, up 8.9 percent from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.72 million head, 13,000 head less than September 2017, and 12,000 head less than August 2018. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head, down 1,000 from last month and 4,000 head less than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,975 pounds, up 35 pounds from last year's figures.
