Schimel Earns Farm Group Endorsements for Attorney General
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/15/2014

The Republican candidate for attorney general is getting the backing of at least two state farm organizations. The Volunteers for Agriculture Committee, which is the political action arm of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau, and the Dairy Business Association are both supporting Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel to replace J.B. Van Hollen in the November 4 general election.

WFBF Governmental Relations Director Paul Zimmerman says Schimel would be someone farmers can count on to protect their ability to farm.

"He has a strong grasp of issues that matter to Wisconsin farmers like livestock care, crop production and the use of farm machinery on roads," Zimmerman said.

During an interview with the VFA committee, Zimmerman says Schimel showed that he fully understood the importance of Wisconsin's Right to Farm and use value assessment of farmland laws.

DBA President Jerry Meissner said his group feels Schimel will work to ensure that regulations are used to permit the safe and responsible growth of the dairy industry, not as a political weapon to prevent farm families from prospering.

"Wisconsin's dairy farms are among the most regulated in the country," Meissner said. "This is especially true for the larger farms that produce most of our state's milk. Wisconsin dairy has not only remained competitive in this strict regulatory environment, it has become a national and global leader. The attorney general and the Department of Justice are responsible for enforcing many of the regulations that dairy farms and the rest of agriculture face."

Schimel is facing Democrat Susan Happ, who is the Jefferson County District Attorney.
