Trump: Wisconsin Dairy Woes Helped Form USMCA Deal
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/25/2018

Many of the who's who in Wisconsin GOP politics were in Mosinee on Wednesday evening for a rally featuring President Donald Trump, where he credited the state's dairy farmers for helping him realize the importance of negotiating new trade deals with our neighboring countries. The president, who was in town stumping for Governor Scott Walker and Senate Candidate Leah Vukmir in the upcoming mid-term election, said he has heard the pleas from Wisconsin dairy producers who have been facing financial hardship in recent years.

"When I was here last year, farmers came up to me asking for help. I don't know much about farming, but I know about business and they were telling me about this small surcharge on a specific type of specialty milk," said Trump, who was referring to Canada's decision to institute a new pricing policy designed to discourage U.S. exports of ultra-filtered milk. "This move by Canada got your goat. It was a barrier to Canada. I never forgot that, so you [the farmers] are really responsible to a large extent for the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement we just signed."

Commonly known as USMCA, the deal replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement that the Trump Administration broke away from early in his presidency.

Meanwhile, Walker also spoke at the rally, where he echoed Trump's trade priorities when it comes to dairy.

"I remember the day when the president was here in Wisconsin in April 2017 and we brought in some of the farmers and talked about the problem because Grassland just cut off a bunch of our dairy farmers in this state because of Canada," Walker said. "The president said 'I'm going to bring it up right now' and he took it head on. Unlike so many politicians in Washington in the past, this president never forgot about his promise to the dairy farmers. He's making dairy great again in America and it starts right here in Wisconsin."

Trump and Walker also touted the deal Wisconsin made with FOXCONN, saying the implications of the technology company's presence will be felt in communities statewide.

And President Trump stressed the importance of securing America's borders, calling it unfair when some immigrants want to enter the country illegally while others wait their turn.
