September Milk Production Up in Wisconsin
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 10/21/2014

Milk production on Wisconsin dairy farms was up once again during the month of September. According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, the Dairy State harvested 2.29 billion pounds of milk last month, up 3.2 percent from September 2013, but lower than August's 2.36 billion pounds (partly because September had less days on the calendar).

Nationally, 15.5 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 4.1 percent higher than in 2013, but less than the previous month's 16.2 billion.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.29 billion pounds. Colorado had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 298 million pounds of milk in August, up 10.8 percent from the same month last year.

All of the major milk producing states had an increase in production in September when compared with last year, with the exception of Illinois.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows in the major dairy states totaled 8.59 million head, 78,000 head more than September 2013, and 4,000 head more than August 2014. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head. Production per cow averaged 1,805 pounds, up 60 pounds from a year ago.
