State Egg Output Rose in September

Wisconsin egg production continues to rebound from last year's avian flu outbreak. Last month, state poultry operations reported that their hens laid 139 million eggs, up five percent from last month, and 27 percent more than a year earlier.

The average number of all layers on hand in September was 5.97 million, an increase of six percent from August and 27 percent more than last year. This is the largest inventory on record for Wisconsin.

Eggs per 100 layers were 2,334, down two percent from last month, but up slightly from September 2015.

Nationally, egg production totaled 8.30 billion during September, up 10 percent from last year. The total number of layers averaged 361 million, up seven percent from last year.
