Winnekins Named National Farm Broadcaster of the Year
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/23/2020
A western Wisconsin farm radio personality has been named the 2020 Farm Broadcaster of the Year by the National Association of Farm Broadcasters. Brian Winnekins was given the honor virtually by his fellow colleagues during the NAFB's national convention on Friday for contributing the most to farm broadcasting during the past year.
"Back in 2003 I shared the stage with Orion Samuelson, my long-time mentor at NAFB, when I won the Horizon Award, and he was named Farm Broadcaster of the Year," Winnekins told Wisconsin Ag Connection. "To now be associated with past
winners of this award like Orion and recognized by my peers is very humbling. I'm incredibly honored to receive this award especially in a year of challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I've seen farm broadcasters from across the country working every
day to provide much needed information, entertainment, and comfort for their audiences. I'm proud to be associated with such a great group of broadcasters and NAFB."
Winnekins began his radio career while in college at WKTY in La Crosse and later worked for WBOG in Tomah and WCOW in Sparta. In 2011, he moved to Durand and purchased WRDN, which had been off the air for several years at the time. The station
reaches more than 6,500 farms.
Brian served as the NAFB president in 2016 and was also a former regional VP for the organization.
The NAFB is a group of professional farm broadcasters who work for a commercial radio or TV station or network.
