That's a Wrap: DATCP Issues Final Crop Report of 2020

Even with several inches of snow falling on some fields in southern and central Wisconsin early last week, farmers were able to take advantage of good weather to finish up their fall field work. The state's agriculture department released its final crop/weather report of the 2020 growing season on Monday, which noted the sunny days and above normal temperatures caused the snow to melt. However, that resulted in soils becoming too soft to support heavy machinery in certain areas.

Reporters stated that adequate soil moisture and warm temperatures throughout November have left fall planted and perennial crops well prepared to overwinter.

Topsoil moisture levels were rated two percent very short, eight percent short, 78 percent adequate and 12 percent surplus.

Corn for grain harvest was 95 percent complete--more than a month better than last year and 10 days ahead of the five-year average. The moisture content of corn harvested for grain was reported at 17 percent.

Ninety-seven percent of winter wheat was emerged, also four weeks ahead of the same time in 2019. Winter wheat conditions remained at 84 percent good to excellent statewide.

And fall tillage was reported as 84 complete, which is well ahead of normal for the week of Thanksgiving.

The agency will resume its weekly summary of crop progress conditions on April 5, 2021.
