Senate Unanimously Approves Hemp Farming Bill

A bill that would legalize industrial hemp farming in Wisconsin is sailing through the legislature with little resistance. On Tuesday, the state Senate voted unanimously to approve the measure, which would create a state registration process for hemp growth as a
commodity.
Under the proposal, anyone with a prior drug conviction would not be eligible for a license to grow hemp. In addition, the crop would not be allowed to contain more than 0.3 percent THC, an active ingredient in marijuana.
Supporters say hemp farming would provide an economic benefit for farmers, while creating new manufacturing and tech opportunities for the state.
The Assembly will now take up the bill before sending it to Gov. Scott Walker for approval.
Thirty-one states have legalized industrial hemp, including neighboring states like Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota.
