Top Winter Wheat, Oat Producing Counties of 2020 Determined

New estimates from the USDA give us an indication of what counties produced the most winter wheat and oat crops during the past growing season. The agency says Fond du Lac County was the largest winter wheat producing county in Wisconsin in 2020 with about 667,000 bushels. Dane and Dodge Counties were second and third; with south central Wisconsin being the largest wheat producing district.

Dane County was also the highest yielding county at 83.5 bushels per acre. Dodge and Columbia Counties had the next two highest yields at 82.0 and 79.0 bushels, respectively. Juneau County had the lowest yield at 46.0 bushels per acre.

Oconto County had the greatest increase in yield with a 19.4 bushels per acre jump from the previous growing season. Iowa was the county with the largest drop in yield after falling 5.2 bushels per acre.

In 2020, Marathon County was the largest oat-producing county with 621,000 bushels. Manitowoc County was second with 544,000 bushels harvested.

Calumet County had the highest yield in the state for oats with 83.2 bushels per acre, followed by Fond du Lac County with 77.4 and Langlade County at 76.0 bushels per acre.
