Cold, Dry Weather Helping Farmers Wrap Up Harvest
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/20/2018

Below normal temperatures, along with a break from the snow and rain allowed Wisconsin farmers to take another shot at getting their crops in last week. According to the latest crop/weather report from the state's agriculture department, overnight lows fell into the teens and single digits. This caused muddy fields to firm up as the ground started to freeze. However, the frost was still shallow in many areas, keeping fields treacherous for heavy machinery and fully loaded grain wagons.

Topsoil moisture levels were one percent short, 75 percent adequate and 24 percent surplus.

Reporters say corn harvested for grain was 80 percent complete, which was a full week ahead of last year and two days better than the five-year average. The moisture content of corn harvested for grain was 18 percent.

In the soybean fields, 91 percent of the crop has been put into the bins. That was a week behind the 2017 season and nine days slow than normal.

Eighty-eight percent of the winter wheat crop has emerged, with 77 percent of the crop looking good to excellent.

And fall tillage was reported at 58 percent complete--one day ahead of last year, but six days behind the average.
