Thanksgiving Meal in Wisconsin to Cost About $47.26
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/17/2017

Your Thanksgiving meal will likely cost less to prepare next week when compared to the previous year's holiday. According to the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, a traditional holiday meal for a family of ten will cost around $47.26--which is down 65-cents from last year's average. This year's annual survey is now at its lowest level since 2010.

The Madison-based farm group conducted its survey of 12 food items of the traditional Thanksgiving meal in 33 communities across Wisconsin. WFBF Spokesperson Amy Eckelberg says the report's findings show that a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal is not only very affordable, but will probably cost less than $5 per person.

"The survey shows that food prices are extremely stable," Eckelberg said. "This year we can be thankful for our farmers who are working hard to provide an abundance of food for us to enjoy."

The average price for a 16-pound turkey in Wisconsin supermarkets was nearly a dollar cheaper than last year at $21.92. Other year-to-year savings were found in the costs of fresh cranberries, cube stuffing and miscellaneous ingredients. However, shoppers will pay a bit more for a gallon of milk, cream, rolls, relish tray, pie mix, sweet potatoes and green peas

Meanwhile, the American Farm Bureau also released its survey of the same 12 items for a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal at $49.12. That was 75-cents below the 2016 survey, and also averages less than $5 per person.

Wisconsin communities that took part in the survey include Appleton, Ashland, Belleville, Beloit, Chilton, De Pere, Dodgeville, Eau Claire, Ellsworth, Elroy, Janesville, Lodi, Manawa, Manitowoc, Marshfield, Medford, Mequon, New Richmond, Paddock Lake, Pewaukee, Platteville, Plover, Prairie du Chien, Richland Center, Saukville, Shawano, Sheboygan Falls, Sparta, Union Grove, Verona, Waterford, Watertown and West Bend.
