Company Making Plans for Biodiesel Plant Near Cashton
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/15/2006

A fourth company in as many months says they're going into the biodiesel production business in Wisconsin. BEST Energies Inc. of Madison is planning to begin making biodiesel from soybean oil by April in a new facility in Cashton. The firm also hopes to begin producing electricity by late 2007 using synthetic gas made from manure and sawdust at a pyrolysis unit that would be built near the biodiesel plant.

The biodiesel plant, which will be located in the Cashton Greens Business Park, is expected to have about 15 employees. According to BEST Energies President Neil Young, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is going to be holding a hearing on the proposed construction and operation permits. If all goes as planned, construction could start within 30 days.

Young says BEST BioEnergy Park of Cashton, a subsidiary of BEST Energies, will operate the plant and sell the biodiesel to distributors who will blend it with petroleum diesel fuel. Construction of the pyrolysis unit will then begin by mid-2007.

Last month, Badger Ag Solutions LLC said it's working on plans to construct a soybean crush plant and biodiesel facility in Owen. And over the summer, North Prairie Productions of Evansville kicked of an equity drive to build a $42 million facility in Rock County, and Quality Roasting, Inc. near Valders hopes to double its capacity in order to produce soybean oil by constructing a crushing facility by 2008.
