Thanksgiving Meal in Wisconsin to Cost About $50.08
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/20/2015

Despite worries that the avian flu will affect chicken and turkey prices this year, your Thanksgiving will actually cost less to prepare than a year ago. According to the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, a traditional holiday meal for a family of ten will cost around $50.08--which is down 78-cents from last year's average. The annual survey had been inching higher for seven of the past 10 years, with lower dairy prices in 2009 and 2013 bringing the total bill lower.

The Madison-based farm group conducted its survey of 12 food items of the traditional Thanksgiving meal in 36 communities across Wisconsin. Farm Bureau Spokesman Casey Langan says the average price of turkey in Wisconsin was unchanged compared to 2014--with a 16 pound bird selling for $23.36.

"The survey's total price, when divided by 10, shows preparing a nutritious, home-cooked Thanksgiving meal costs about $5 per person," Langan said. "A wholesome family feast is still a better deal than a trip through the drive-thru."

Besides the turkey, shoppers will pay about the same this Thanksgiving for fresh cranberries, while spending less for milk, sweet potatoes, green peas and miscellaneous ingredients. Cream, dinner rolls, relish trays, pumpkin pie mix and cubed stuffing will ring up a little more compared to last year in Wisconsin supermarkets.

Meanwhile, the American Farm Bureau also released its survey of the same 12 items for a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal at $50.11. That was 70-cents more than in 2014.

On the national level, turkey, pumpkin pie mix, a dozen brown-n-serve rolls, cubed bread stuffing and pie shells all rang up higher at the cash register. But a gallon of milk, ingredients, whipping cream, cranberries and green peas saw modest decreases from 2014.

Wisconsin communities that took part in the survey include Appleton, Beloit, Burlington, Chilton, De Pere, Eau Claire, Edgerton, Ellsworth, Elroy, Fond du Lac, Hartland, Hayward, Jefferson, Kewaunee, Ladysmith, Lodi, Manawa, Manitowoc, Marshfield, Medford, New London, New Richmond, Paddock Lake, Platteville, Plover, Rice Lake, Richland Center, Saukville, Shawano, Sheboygan Falls, Sparta, Spooner, Sun Prairie, Thorp, Waterford and West Bend.
