Breunig Elected Chair of Dairy Innovation Hub Council
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 02/06/2020

A Sauk City dairy producer has been elected chairman of the Dairy Innovation Hub advisory council. During the group's first meeting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison West Madison Agricultural Research Station last week, Mitch Breunig of Mystic Valley Dairy was chosen to lead the group, which was established to ensure that investments in university personnel, facilities, research and training on behalf of the hub will be used to move the state's dairy industry forward.

The Dairy Innovation Hub is being funded by the state to harnesses research and development at the UW-Madison, UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls campuses to keep Wisconsin's $45 billion dairy industry at the global forefront in producing nutritious dairy products in an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable manner.

As chairman, Breunig will work with UW-Madison Dairy Scientist Heather White and Hub Project Manager Maria Woldt to assemble the council and set agendas.

"The industry has faith in us to do the right thing with this investment," said Breunig. "That is why we are here."

During this first year of hub activity, university officials say they plan to utilize funds to help address outdated facilities and equipment at the three schools.

The council will also focus on four areas outlined in the original hub proposal, including stewarding land and water resources, enriching human health and nutrition, ensuring animal health and welfare, and growing farm business and communities.
