Rep. Kind Introduced Bill to Prevent Spread of CWD
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/21/2017

Wisconsin Congressman Ron Kind is introducing legislation aimed at preventing the spread of one of the deadliest diseases found in whitetail deer. The 'Chronic Wasting Disease Management Act' will support state and tribal efforts to develop and implement management strategies, as well as support research regarding the causes of CWD and methods to control the further spread of the brain disorder.

The La Crosse Democrat says CWD-positive deer have been found in or within 10 miles of Grant, Vernon, Crawford, Richland, Monroe, Juneau, Adams, Portage and Wood counties. Many other states have also had confirmed cases of CWD in its wild deer.

"As an avid hunter who has passed the tradition down to my sons I know how important maintaining a healthy deer herd is to both Wisconsin's heritage and economy," Kind said. "Chronic wasting disease has the potential to devastate deer herds, and it is time we bring hunters, scientists, and officials together to create a comprehensive plan to manage and prevent the spread of the disease."

Kind notes that 88-percent of Wisconsin's hunters participate in deer hunting, which means critical action needs to be taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

The bill is being co-sponsored by Jim Sensenbrenner of Menomonee Falls.
