Dairy Conference Focuses on Reproduction, Transition Cows
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/20/2013

The Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin is holding a pair of Herdsperson Conferences next month in an effort to bring together four of the industry's leading experts in the field of reproductive management. The events are being held December 4 in Wisconsin Dells and December 5 in Appleton from 9:30 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.

Dr. Julio Giordano, assistant professor of dairy cattle biology and management in the Department of Animal Science at Cornell University, will discuss the latest economics of reproduction research, including how dairy producers can calculate and compare the economic value of dairy reproductive programs so the best decisions can be made.

A presentation by Dr. Dick Wallace, former dairy farm manager for the University of Illinois Dairy Cattle Research Unit, will focus on raising heifers in ways that improve overall cash flow and profitability. Actual herd data will be used to demonstrate how to find hidden opportunities.

Dr. Luis Mendonca, Kansas State dairy extension specialist, will talk about management strategies during the transition period that can help maximize postpartum health and improve reproductive performance.

And Dr. Dick Wallace will present how being mindful of medication labels protects dairy meat and milk, and your market access.

A panel discussion led by Dr. Paul Fricke of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will also be held, where experts will examine new electronic systems for managing reproduction in dairy cows.

Courses run in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-School of Veterinary Medicine and may be valued up to 5.9 CEUs.
