Opening Deer Season Harvest Numbers Up in Wisconsin
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/23/2010

We now have a better idea of how hunters did in the woods during the first two days of Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer season. The Department of Natural Resources says hunters bagged about 106,500 deer over the opening weekend, which is six percent higher than the same time last year. They also shot about 2,100 more bucks than in 2009.

Ed Culhane of the DNR says favorable weather conditions likely contributed to the better overall harvest. Hunters also reported that they are seeing more deer while hunting compared to last year.

The department's license sales office reported 607,926 gun deer licenses sold by the start of shooting hours on November 20. That's down three percent from the comparable day in 2009 but in at least one important category, 10 and 11 year old hunters, sales were up 15 percent from 2009.

Deer license and tag sales will continue through the hunting seasons.
