'Alice' Cuts First Christmas Tree of the Season in Manitowoc Co.
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/21/2014

Wisconsin's 67th Alice in Dairyland helped kick-off the holiday season this week during a visit to eastern Wisconsin. Zoey Brooks cut down the state's first official Christmas tree of the year during a ceremony near Mishicot on Thursday. The event took place at Taylor's Trees, which is a family owned tree operation in business since 1990.

Owned by the Keith and Terrie Taylor Family, the enterprise also offers hand-tied wreaths, door swags, and evergreen boughs.

"The Holiday season is a great time to recognize our hardworking Christmas tree farmers," Brooks said. "Here in Wisconsin, we have nearly 900 Christmas tree farms and growers who bring us the centerpiece of our Holiday decoration. Support our Wisconsin Christmas Tree Growers by choosing a Wisconsin-grown tree this season and help to keep money right here in our local communities."

Zoey was joined by students from Mishicot's Eco Club and Mishicot FFA officers for the annual event, where she harvested a Balsam Fir tree. The area will also be the site of next year's Alice in Dairyland finals, which is being held in Manitowoc County in May 2015.

This marks the 15th year the annual first cutting was held by the reigning Alice in Dairyland.
