State Corn Growers Praise EPA's Delay of Fuel Standard
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 11/24/2014

The leader of the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association says Friday's announcement by the Environmental Protection Agency to defer finalizing the Renewable Fuel Standard until 2015 makes sense in order to get the correct volumes of renewable fuel into the marketplace. WCGA President Brian Long said the decision recognized the proposed rule was unworkable.

"When Congress passed the energy bill in 2008, the corn industry was challenged to produce the corn needed to expand clean fuel, while continuing to feed consumers," said Long. "Part of our energy security and clean air solution is sitting right out in our corn fields. Corn farmers just need certainty with the RFS."

The state corn group says Wisconsin has nine ethanol plants that produce more than 470 million gallons of ethanol each year and support over 19,000 jobs.

On Friday, the EPA issued a notice announcing that the agency will not be finalizing the 2014 RFS volume standards before the end of the year. Instead, the EPA intends to take action on the 2014 renewable volume obligations in 2015 prior to or in conjunction with action on the 2015.

Meanwhile, the National Corn Growers Association said in a statement that the RFS is good for farmers, consumers the environment; and provides consumers with a choice of clean, affordable energy grown here in the United States.
